UV Angel: UV Angel Clean Air™

The UV Angel team has one primary focus: make the world a cleaner and safer place for everybody. The company uses advanced research and development in ultraviolet light to reduce harmful pathogens in the air and on surfaces. Their patented and safe technologies disinfect harmful viruses, bacteria, and fungus with no harmful chemicals or human interaction. Originally developed for hospitals, this leading technology is now used across the world in healthcare, restaurants, education, athletics, government, and more. UV Angel helps make the environments in which we live, shop, eat, and work measurably safer and cleaner.

Business Challenge:

UV Angel was ready for the next generation of its Clean Air™ Series product.

This modern, ceiling-mounted product combines standard in-ceiling lighting with a proprietary UV-C air treatment system. It pulls air into a sealed UV-C chamber, where harmful germs are eliminated with up to 99.99% effectiveness. Once disinfected, the clean air is returned to the room. To support growing customer needs, UV Angel wanted to provide real-time visibility into device statistics, usage, performance, and preventative maintenance across entire fleets. At the same time, they aimed to build a future-ready infrastructure. This required a secure, authenticated Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) interface, along with an over-the-air firmware update solution to ensure ongoing improvements and support for emerging use cases.

UV Angel partnered with Mutually Human to power Clean Air™ with advanced embedded firmware.

To support the advancement of its Clean Air™ technology, UV Angel brought in Mutually Human for software consulting and engineering expertise. Mutually Human’s team developed embedded firmware designed to safely operate and monitor each component of the system. This included precise control over configuration, calibration, and ongoing performance—ensuring the product delivers consistent and reliable air purification.

Results:

To further strengthen the Clean Air™ system, we optimized cloud connectivity and remote monitoring for UV Angel. This included enhancements to MQTT telemetry, secure firmware boot, and BLE-based device control. Additionally, we supported mobile app integration to enable seamless configuration, calibration, and ongoing maintenance tracking.

Cloud Connectivity & Remote Monitoring

To improve system performance, we enabled seamless cloud connectivity through MQTT telemetry. This allows for remote configuration, real-time monitoring, and early fault detection—ensuring more efficient and reliable operation.

Secure Firmware & Authentication

A secure boot feature was implemented to ensure firmware authenticity and security. This prevents unauthorized code execution and enhances device reliability.

Mobile App Enhancements

We updated the existing iOS WiFi provisioning app. This update enabled offline calibration and ensured a seamless user setup experience.

Device Command & Control via BLE

A BLE-based control feature was developed, allowing users to monitor UV bulb and filter maintenance needs while managing the system’s real-time state.

Embedded Software Integration

We collaborated with mobile and cloud teams to integrate embedded software with the broader system, ensuring seamless communication across all components.
